As part of our National Poetry Day celebrations all members of Year 7 have, with the help of their English teacher, selected a poem to learn and recite in front of their class on or around National Poetry Day: Thursday 4th October. In preparation they have all been carrying around a “Poem in their Pocket” and taking every opportunity to learn it – a skill which will prove to be extremely useful to them as they prepare for examinations in the years ahead.

The poems chosen have been many and varied with poetry from the literary canon such as The Eagle by Tennyson to Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. Staff have also become involved with a range of poems being presented by them as well.

The celebrations culminated in a National Poetry Day assembly in which many brave Year 7s recited their poems to the whole of Year 7 and lots of interested staff who came especially to hear their performances. Even our two ITT trainees from University of Sunderland recited a poem of their choice, with Spike Milligan’s “On the Ning, Nang, Nong” being particularly well received by the audience.

We certainly have some very accomplished readers in Year 7 and look forward to hearing more from them at our harvest festival on Wednesday 17th October.
