After comprehensive victories at the Sunderland Schools Basketball Championships Thornhill U14 Girls went on to represent Sunderland in the Tyne and Wear finals at City Space on Tuesday 28th February. Their first game was against Cardinal Hume School. Despite most of the possession too many missed shots meant they opened the tournament with a 4-4 draw. 3 VICTORIES AGAINST John Spence (12-0), Joseph Swan (6-0) and Sacred Heart (6-4) meant that a win in their final game against Whitburn would see them through to the next stage of the Sainsburys School Games. Once again missed shots cost them! A close game saw Whitburn win 4-0 and go on to the regional stage at Teesside.
The Squad comprised of Rosie Arvanitopoulou, Abby Hughes, Safeenah Hussain, Charlotte Lamb, Darna Leng, Lesedi Mphisa, Sophie Sweeney, Lauren Tuthill, Elle Williamson and Melissa Wilkinson.
Some of the girls will now go on to defend their Sunderland Schools Volleyball Champions Title at Biddick on the 26th February. Lets hope they can go one better than last year when they again finished runners-up in the Tyne Wear finals.
This talented group are also playing indoor cricket and have played 3 games with 1 win and 2 losses. Some of them will be representing Thornhill in the Sunderland Schools U14 Netball Tournament to be held at Thornhill on the 6th of March.
The Year 8 girls begin their Rugby League Campaign on Thursday 6th February at Academy 360 and at Washington on the 4th March. Last year they were runners up in the Tyne and Wear finals after receiving coaching from Joe Brown of Gateshead Thunder. They then switch codes and play in the Rugby Union tournament at Ashbrooke on the 5th March along with Yr 7 pupils who have benefitted from coaching from Laura Colman , a development officer for womens rugby employed by the RFU.
In between all that will be the usual Interhouse Netball competitions and the climax of Inter school Netball fixtures and tournaments.
Miss Simpson has also entered 2 Football competitions for Yr 7, 8 & 9 girls and talks have been held with representatives of the newly formed Durham Ladies Premiership club to bring players in to help coach girls football
The boys have Volleyball competitions to come also after half term and possibly some inter house basketball. A group of Yr 10 girls , led by Maggie Bruce , are coaching Yr 7 boys and girls basketball on Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime and will be looking to organise a tournament before Easter.
On Thursday Feb 6th all yr 7 pupils will be taking part in a Jump Rope Sponsored Skip to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.
A very busy time in the PE Dept !
