All at Thornhill were thrilled to welcome back ex-pupils Ben Forster and Michael Pickering this week as they visited the north-east on the latest leg of their Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour. TV camera crews and press reporters followed the two young men into their former school as they paid tribute to the teachers who had inspired them to seek such successful careers in musical theatre.

Both were entrants to Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Superstar TV talent show with Ben winning the lead role in the critically acclaimed rock opera following five nights of prime time, nail biting, TV contest. Each night his performances grew in confidence, demonstrating his superior talents until Sir Andrew, and the public through their telephone voting, were in no doubt he was the right choice.

Fantastically Michael was then offered the supporting role of Peter in the show and so the pair have been reunited, working together as they tour the country. The show opened in the O2 Arena in London with Newcastle's Metro Arena being their third sell-out venue so far.

The two gave advice to our current pupils in a packed main hall on Friday and answered wide ranging questions about their experiences working in the theatre before posing for photographs and signing autographs with lucky students. The whole school event appeared on BBC and ITV evening programmes and has been extensively covered by the Sunderand Echo.

Ben and Michael are two of seven Thornhill pupils who in recent years have appeared in lead roles in West End musical shows and are testament to the high quality teaching in our music and performing arts departments. This area of our curriculum is soon to benefit from a further boost as a fantastic new suite of facilities will be opened early in 2013.
