Tuesday 31st March was a very memorable day indeed for Thornhill School. In conjunction with the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz, 85 year old Holocaust survivor Mr Zigi Shipper visited school to give his testimony.
Our audience including parents, pupils, staff, partner primary school children, community representatives and Sunderland’s Mayor and Mayoress, all listened in awe as Zigi recalled the atrocities he and others had endured.
His concluding words are a message to us all in terms of challenging any form of prejudice, “Do not hate because of nationality or colour. Remember one thing, we are all human beings. Don’t hate and never give up.”
Thornhill school is very grateful to Zigi and also to former pupil Mr Peter Bull (now teaching in Liverpool) who facilitated this remarkable event. Mr Bull also told us that having left Thornhill more than 30 years ago, he still adopts our school motto “Learn to Live”
