New Uniform Proposal - Thornhill School New Uniform Proposal

Posted by Louise Newton at 12:01PM on 19 March 2015

After almost 50 years we are proposing to modernise our school uniform. We would welcome any comments regarding the proposed change.

This proposal is in the early stages of planning but any changes to our uniform would be integrated over a period of time period.

More information for our new year 7 starters in September will be available soon.

My son is due to start in Sept and Ive told him you are wanting to change the uniform and is gutted, he liked the idea of the maroon jacket. He doesn't want to be like everyone else. Plus Thornhill children are easily identifiable. Unless you use the Navy or Black and edge it with Maroon or change the skirts and trousers to grey?

“It looks like you’re going to a funeral” “I hate it” These are just two of many negative comments about the new uniform proposed. The majority asked seems against this archaic and vulgar tragedy, and I am with them for many reasons. Firstly, if the uniform was to change what else would have to change? Throughout the school, the noticeable maroon colour can be seen on room placards, display boards and even the curtains of the stage. If the school’s colour scheme was to be changed, the school would have to spend thousands of pounds upon changing all of the things what represents us. I’m sure that you would agree that this money could be better spent on resources or improving our facilities. I cannot believe you are going to destroy 49 years of tradition, just because a minority disagree. Since 1966, the school’s pupils have all been united through that uniform. Young and old are brought together through this very uniform. If it is changed, you are destroying a lifetime of memories, and a wealth of experiences. No longer will children be able to relate with their parents’ school life. The main problem with the change in uniform, is that it would make our school bland and lifeless. We are the only school in the North East with that uniform, making us unique and easily recognised. As a community we strive for our school to do better and it is seen as one of constant merit. As unlikely as it seems the Maroon blazer is a big part of the picture; without the maroon blazer, the black/navy is just like every other school in the world. The maroon blazer is what makes our school what it is. As an individual I do not understand why you would need to make unnecessary deteriorations to something which is already fine. This uniform is our image. Don’t ruin it. Yours Sincerely, Lynette Steel 10B2

I generally think that they should not change the uniform for many reasons! 1. The maroon colour has been with the school for nearly 50 years! 2. It is a unique colour, no other school in sunderland has this colour, stand out from the croud! 3. If it is changed, then nearly half of the school will be wearing the new uniform and the other half will be wearing the old uniform! 4. why spend money re-inforcing the uniform, when money could be spent else wear in the school! 5. They would have to change the badge and it would just be a hassle! I have been in this school 4 years, im nearly into my last year at school, i dont want to see these changes made. i want to remember thornhill for the unique blazers, not for changing! I am glad that the year 10s and 11s dont have to change thier uniform, because i wont be. I want to walk out of that school in year 11 with the blazer that i walked in with on the first day!!!! This is just my opinion! 6. You sholdnt have to spend loads of money on NEW uniform when you have a perfectly good one!! Beetroot (as they say) All the way!!!! Thornhill School Lucy Dixon 10B2

We dont like the new proposed uniform its just like any other comp uniform , plain and boring. The moroon colour is unique and makes thornhill stand out. Thornhill has come out top school in sunderland academically, its a uniform to be proud of and a fabulous colour . So why change?

I think our uniform is very distinctive and as a former pupil I'm always proud to see it around Sunderland. I think the black and navy looks just like all the rest - very generic.

I think its a bad idea to change the colour. I went to thornhill and my son now does and to see him in the traditional uniform brings back fond memories.Everyone recognises the current thornhill uniform as its unique. Please embrace your fifty year history thornhill don't try to change something that doesn't need to change.

The new uniform looks so good in my opinion, I think it would make our school look so distinctive with the black colours. My best friend Lee Mills was modelling the new threads and he looked so good in them!!!

Pls do not change the uni4m, me and my mates really lyk it and i think it wud bee a terrible shame to change it, think about the costs 4 the mammys and dads. there should be a schhool vote.

It has came to my attention that many pupils are anxious about the change and unsure as to why the school has decided to change after numerous years of using the traditional maroon. Me and Lee are amongst that majority and me in particular, we have came to a joint decision we aren't in favour of the above options, pupils must unite. Together we can express our feelings! Together we are strong, also i agree tremendously with Harry Barnes about his opinion.

The new uniform proposal is atrocious. Both the black and navy look awful. We'll just look like any other school. The maroon makes us stand out. We should be afraid to wear our distinct colours because we have a 'Bad Reputation'. I hope the new uniforms are forgotten about entirely.

Many earlier comments have referred to the unique colour of Thornhill's uniform. Why change? Should we not embrace and celebrate 50 years and look forward to proudly wearing our historic uniform over the next 50 years ?

Does this mean that students already in the school have to buy a whole new uniform? If so this would be a massive extra expense for any parent, especially for ones with more than one child in the school. If the uniform is being rolled out over a period of years starting with each year 7 group we will then have 5 years of essentially a school with 2 uniforms. Any parent wishing to hand down a perfectly good uniform in times when money is tight will be totally unable to. Either way it's not a very smooth transition. I have always been a fan of the uniqueness of the maroon uniform and am extremely unhappy at the prospect of having to change and blend in with everybody else.

To change this uniform would be an absolute tragedy! Why break a 50 year tradition. Our uniform stand out from all the other schools make us unique and the colour of our uniform bring together the young and old. I am very proud to wear maroon To change the uniform would be destroying many fond memories the pupils have shared during the school experience.

i LOVE the old uniform because it is unique and simple. it stands out from all the other school. All the teachers and parents went here and wore this uniform. if it is changed, everything else needs to be changed like the facilities and things. so i rather prefer the MAROON uniform better. xx

I think it's okay but that grey skirt is vile it would be better if it was black cause then it would go with the tights and blazer. But for those who don't want this uniform should be allowed to carry in wearing the one we have now for at least a year x

But next time there is a change like this there should be like 2 year notice instead of finding out the year it's going to change, but to be honest it should stop maroon as we look different from the rest and stand out. And also there should be a school vote for this as this can cause a coupe of problems everyone should get there sayyyyyy????????

I think the school should change the uniform as its been 50 years since they picked maroon. Me and Ryan Barker would love to wear the new uniform as it look better and much cooler. I think all the negative comments about the uniform is because there not used to the idea yet but it will have to be changed even if its not now so people will have to get used to it.

Maroon is part of the school's history & something as an ex-pupil, I was proud to belong to Thornhill. Not many schools survive 50 years & should be very proud that thornhill has without uniform change, so why change now? I don't personally think it should change the blazer or tie,but if down to cost maybe white shirts, grey skirts & trousers would make it more affordable. Why blend in with other schools, the colour makes it unique..
