Girls Sports Update

Yr 8 Girls Rugby League

Beaten but at the 5th attempt!

Thornhill have played Whitburn 4 times before last night drawing 1 and winning 3, but last night Whitburn had their revenge beating an unusually subdued Yr 8 team to win by 8 tries to 6. Thornhill scorers were Madison Craggs, Chloe Metcalf and Ava Craggs. This defeat ends the girls run in the Sainsburys School Games Rugby League competition for this season.

Any girls in yr 7, 8 or 9 wishing to play rugby are invited to training sessions on Tuesday nights after school. The sessions are run by Joe Brown, Gateshead Thunder player and are free to all for the next 5 weeks. Joe has also started a Sunderland Team, Sunderland Scorpions who will be playing in a girls league across Tyne and Wear. Training starts on Wednesdays at Academy 360. See Mrs Thom for more details.

The girls are still in the Rugby Union Competition and will represent Sunderland next Thursday. The venue is still not confirmed but the team are looking forward to going onto the next stage in this code of rugby!

Ashbrooke Rugby Club are also offering girls the opportunity to play rugby and their training sessions take place on Thursday evenings. Again Mrs Thom has all the details.

Yr 8/9 X-Country

As Sunderland Yr 8/9 Girls X-Country Champions Thornhill was invited to take part in the Durham Individual Schools Cup at Watergate Park , Gateshead last week. The team , escorted by Mr Barnes, finished 7th against mainly teams of Yr 9 girls from all across Durham and Tyneside.

Sydney Neary was 7th finisher with Jessica Grieveson 19th, Erin High 37th, Amelia Shilling 38th, Kate Price 39th and Sophie Sweeney (the only Yr 9 pupil) was 40th. Sophie stepped in at the last minute when Kody Waterston had to withdraw through injury. The team put a good performance against tough opposition.

Yr 9 Netball

The Yr 9 Netball team finished 3rd in the Sunderland Schools Tournament. They beat the eventual winners, St Anthonys, in their final game but losses to Monkwearmouth and Farringdon cost them the runners-up spot.

The team bounced back with a league win over St. Roberts on Tuesday 17-1, with Yr 8s also winning 12-4
