World Book Day 2019 - Thornhill School World Book Day 2019

Posted by Louise Meah at 11:47AM on 28 February 2019

As a school which exploits every opportunity to promote the joy of reading, we approach World Book Day on Thursday 7th March with much excitement. Posters advertising World Book Day events are going up around school and, our librarian, Mrs Smith, together with her team of student librarians, is extremely busy creating the World Book Day display as well as preparing for our annual Thornhill Scholastic Book Fair.

This year we are participating in the National Literacy Trust’s Sharing a Story for World Book Day project. This means that in lessons on Thursday 7th March a short story will be read in instalments in all lessons, from Maths to PE, with students having to wait until the last lesson of the day to find out how the stories end. Of course we have selected really exciting stories which will ensure that students are kept on the edge of their seats. In addition there will be the usual World Book day quizzes being undertaken within the English department and the library, with prizes for the winners.

In keeping with this year’s World Book Day  theme of sharing stories, we all recognise the importance of reading with our children to support their continued development as readers. To support our parents and carers in doing this please follow the link to the National Literacy Trust document “Sharing Stories with 9 -12 year olds” which offers some useful tips as well as suggesting some amazing age appropriate fiction titles for independent reading.

….On the subject of independent reading, our annual Book fair this year takes place from 18th – 22nd March where all of the latest books: both fiction and non fiction, will be on sale. Students wishing to purchase a book will be able to use their World Book Day token (value £1.00) in part payment for the book of their choice. More details will be published nearer to the date.
