Guidance

Key Stage 3

At Thornhill Academy we want our pupils to THINK BIG. In Guidance at Key Stage 3 we help our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work in today’s society. We encourage them to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. We introduce our pupils to visitors from a range of backgrounds and occupations and raise awareness of the opportunities that are open to them in the world of work. We provide opportunities for each pupil to record their skill development and recognise and celebrate their achievements and we help pupils begin to think about careers and plan for their own futures. We help them to make healthy and safe lifestyle choices and help them to recognise risk in our world.

Key Stage 4

At Thornhill Academy we want our pupils to THINK BIG. In Guidance at Key Stage 4 we allow our students to explore and discuss issues in today’s society that might impact on them as they become young adults.  We facilitate a safe space in which they can confidently articulate their views and opinions and provide them with links to groups in society who are able to further explore these issues with them. We encourage them to further develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. We introduce our pupils to visitors from a range of backgrounds and occupations and raise awareness of the opportunities that are open to them in the world of work. We recognise and celebrate their achievements and support them as they plan for transition to the next stage of their lives and their educations. We provide them with information and guidance that will support them in making healthy and safe lifestyle choices and help them to recognise risk in our world.

We deliver Guidance in one lesson per week to all pupils in Years 7-9 and one lesson per fortnight to all pupils in Years 10 and 11. This is delivered by staff trained in PSHE. Guidance lessons are enhanced through visiting speakers and online activities where appropriate such as Northumbria Police, Youth for Christ, local colleges and employers, Be Safe and the school nursing team.

In short, we aim to raise the aspirations and the life chances of each young person we teach so that they can THINK BIG.
