When you leave Thornhill Academy it is your choice where you choose to study next. Here you will find the most common routes to start your research.

A-Levels: Advanced level qualifications (known as A-levels) are subject-based qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work. You can normally study three or more A-levels over two years. They’re usually assessed by a series of examinations.

BTEC: is a practical-based, vocational qualification. It can be studied at a college or school. BTEC’S provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a field or subject and are a viable alternative to the more theory-focused, classroom-based ways of learning. While they are commonly known as an alternative to A-levels, BTEC qualifications can be studied at several levels including GCSE and even degree-level.

T-Levels: T Levels are a new alternative to A-levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. Equivalent to 3 A-levels, a T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. Each T Level includes an in-depth industry placement that lasts at least 45 days. Students get valuable experience in the workplace; employers get early sight of the new talent in their industry.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships, which must last for a minimum of 12 months, combine hands-on work with the opportunity to train and obtain qualifications. It’s also a paid position, so you earn while you learn. At least 20% of your time is set aside for learning, usually at a college, university or training provider. The rest of your time is spent applying your knowledge and skills in the actual workplace, doing the job that you set out to get. At the end of it, you’ll gain official certification, which will be equivalent to traditional qualifications.
